Calling all Mommas

I need some help.  Yes, yes, I could use help in general.  But I'm referring to some specific help I need.  I need to hear from you mommas out there.  (Or you daddy's.  No discriminating here.)

Baby Boy Swan is coming in 20ish weeks.  And from what I've heard, babies need lots of stuff.  But seeing as how I've never been a mom, I have no clue what to register for/purchase for this babe.  And I'm seeking your input.

So far we have already gotten some big ticket hand-me-down items.  Stroller.  Car seat.  Baby bathtub.  Glider.  Tons of clothes (a perk of having a nephew and sister-in-law with great taste who is willing to give you ALL of her sons clothes!)  Other than that, we're really lost.

I'd love to know: (1) what are the baby things you got and LOVED? (2) what did you get and not use? (3) Things that are good to have but not necessary essential.  (4) any other random baby advice you'd care to share.

Thanks for your help!

  1. I've received some comments via facebook and email and I thought I'd post them here for everyone to see - in case there are other soon-to-be-mommas out there!

  2. These changed my life! http://www.amazon.com/Munchkin-80101-Formula-Dispenser/dp/B000067E22 (for formula or snacks for the little ones). Also, our video monitor is wonderful- its by Summer.

Read this book before registering...seriously, it helped me figure out which crib, which carseat, what we needed, what we didn't need, etc.

  4. dont be afraid of thrift stores. With a little digging, you can find great, new clothes at a fraction of the price!!

  5. SO FUN! : )
Register for the kind of plastic-y bibs you can wipe off...not the cloth kind you have to wash. I got 9 zillion of those. Hate them! Don't register for blankets, people will probably make you several. Diaper Genie is a MUST. Get the most expensive (Medela) breast pump - it's worth it's weight in gold if you are going to breast feed. Loved my Boppy pillow; definitely get one even if you're not going to breast feed - super useful. White noise machines are kind of pointless...you can use an old ipod or tune a radio to static! One or two nightlights in the nursery are helpful for midnight diaper changes. The backseat carseat mirror thing is a definite must. I could go on and one...but that's probably PLENTY of suggestions. : )

  6. The video monitor is worth it's weight in gold. I have the Summer Day and Night handheld. In the beginning the swing was the best babysitter - EVER! She's 4 months now and kind of tired of it, though. So, if you can borrow one, that is the way to go. Make sure the car seat you got isn't more than 5 years old and hasn't been involved in any accidents. Any trash can works for diapers...the diaper genie has to have special trash bags that are sort of pricey. We use the diaper genie downstairs and have just an old stainless steel trash can with a lid in her room. Medela breast pump FOR SURE if you plan to breastfeed. The play mat - we have the baby einstein ocean one - is awesome! Molly has loved it since DAY 1!!! I could go on and on...I totally agree about the blankets - you'll get more than you will ever be able to use!
