Anyone who has read the news lately has surely seen the headlines about the American woman who "returned" the child she'd adopted from Russia. While I myself don't know how I feel about this, especially given the lack of facts (did the adoption agency misrepresent the boy's true nature/behavioral problems, what sort of problems did he have, what did the "mother" try to do to fix the situation, etc. etc.), it has caused serious debate and raised more issues about international adoptions.
But I just read a story about an American adoption gone wrong and feel outraged. An unwed mother lied and told the father she'd miscarried, and then after she delivered the baby in Virginia she gave it up for adoption in Utah. Apparently Utah has some crazy adoption laws and the father has now been pushed out of the child's life, even though he filed for custody in the state the mother gave birth. Check out the story here. This is clearly a case where the legal system has failed, in a huge way. It's also the kind of story that makes me think I'd really enjoy doing family law - although it would be very emotional and I think that would wear on you after a while.
